Jocelyn Rainey

“Homage to Landscape A Painting" Is the title of my latest painting series. In this new body of work as an expressionist painter, my focus is on the dynamics of color and application processes. The undertaking is to establish my forms within “Landscape” traditions. The appeal of landscapes is that they describe our environment and bring an imagined reality into our minds. The landscape space is contemplation and reflection. Here in my practice I am inspired to release the vibrant colors of nature, sunlight, and floral perfection. This is achieved as I build highly textured and layered surfaces that reflect light and bring depth to the forms. —Jocelyn Rainey 16 January 2022 Rainey, earned a BFA from the College for Creative Studies and her MA from Wayne State University, majoring in painting. She is currently working towards her PhD which hopes to attain in Summer 2022. Rainey has always leaned towards abstraction in her work, although relying on traditional approaches in geometry.  Her palette demonstrates her love of primary color and texture. Collage from canvas cutouts offer new venues for invention and color development. She responds to the encaustic medium and building relief surfaces. Much of her iconography features text and found “studio objects”, as well as recycled clothing. She has been an artist in residence at the Detroit Institute of Art, Wayne County Community College District and the National Conference of Artists. She is currently a Professor of Art at Wayne County Community College District. Rainey has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions at the Sherry Washington Gallery in Detroit; Corridor Gallery and Skylight Gallery in New York and numerous venues throughout America.
